Installation Procedure

Read the instructions below carefully before beginning.  NOTE: It is highly recommended a qualified electrician performs installation.

This unit must be installed in accordance with the Building Regulations; furthermore if the location of your Bri-Mod RD1 requires the provision of a new electrical supply, the supply must conform to the specifications from the latest edition of the IEE wiring regulations. We stress, if in any doubt consult a qualified electrician.

1. Choosing a Site
Ensure there is nothing obstructing the Bri-Mod RD1 module and it is mounted within range of the Infrared (IR) remote control handset. For best results,  the Bri-Mod RD1 should be mounted somewhere out of direct sunlight if possible, and with no obstructions (ensure a clear line of sight) from the IR remote control handset to the Bri-Mod RD1 module such that the IR remote control handset signal is not impaired or blocked. If the Bri-Luxe IR-DX1 IR handset is to be used the range is approximately 20-25 metres, however, the range may be less for consumer IR handsets. Be careful not to mount the Bri-Mod RD1 module too close to emitters of infrared (IR) such as incandescent lamps and heaters as they can prevent reliable reception of the signal from the remote control handset.

2. Mounting
The unit must be mounted vertically as shown in figure 1 to ensure correct operation. Remember to keep the Bri-Mod RD1module out of direct sunlight if possible, and ensure a clear line of sight from the IR remote control handset to the green Bri-Luxe logo on the front of the Bri-Mod RD1 module.

3. Fixing
Fit to wall or post by drilling two holes for the mounting bracket/ socket holder using the bracket as a template. Use the No. 8 machine head 25mm long screws and plastic plugs provided. We have provided a 20mm cable gland and hex nut with each kit. Fasten the gland to the mounting bracket/socket holder using the hex nut. If preferred, the mounting bracket/socket holder will accept a 20mm diameter conduit.

4. Wiring
We highly recommend that a qualified electrician carry out the installation of this unit.
Use maximum cross section area copper conductors of between 1.0 mm² to 2.5 mm² with the NEMA socket terminal block.

Isolate electricity supply by switching off at the mains.
Pass the cables through the cable gland, mounting bracket/ socket holder and the gasket.
Wire as shown in the wiring diagram in Fig. 2 below.
If in any doubt, consult a qualified electrician.

5. Fixing the NEMA Socket into the Mounting Bracket/Socket Holder
Place the gasket into the mounting bracket/ socket holder. Fit the NEMA socket into the mounting bracket/ socket holder ensuring “N” arrow on the top face of the NEMA socket is oriented as shown in Fig. 4.

Fig. 4 – Correct Orientation of the NEMA Socket in the Mounting Bracket/ Socket Holder

6. Connecting the Bri-Mod RD1 Module to the NEMA Socket
Locate and position the three metal terminals on the dimmer module to match up with the identical receptacles on the socket. Push the Bri-Mod RD1 terminals into to socket and twist the module clockwise to lock it into position. Once fitted, check that the green Bri-Luxe logo on the Bri-Mod RD1 module faces away from the mounting surface. If not, remove and check orientation of the NEMA socket as described in step 5 (Fixing the NEMA Socket into the Mounting Bracket/ Socket Holder). To remove the Bri-Mod RD1 module, twist it anticlockwise and pull it out of the NEMA socket.

7. Programming and Operation of the Bri-Mod RD1 Dimmer Switch
Please refer to the Programming and Operating Guide included separately with this equipment.

 THIS PRODUCT IS SUITABLE FOR:
Mains voltage GLS and candle bulbs; most dimmable electronic low voltage transformers - including those requiring trailing-edge control (See “Transformers" box below), GU10 or similar HiSpot mains halogen bulbs up to the rating on the rear of the product, and Dimmable Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs).

THIS PRODUCT IS NOT SUITABLE FOR AND SHOULD NOT BE USED WITH:
Fluorescent or Standard Compact Fluorescent lamps (CFLs), High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps, their control equipment and luminaires, wire-wound or toroidal transformers and electric motors. It must not be used with PIR and/or photocell controlled lamps and luminaires. This product is not suitable for most LED lamps unless the LED lamp is specifically intended for use with mains voltage dimmer switch control.

TRANSFORMERS

Use only on Dimmable Electronic Transformers*.
To calculate load, add the VA ratings of the transformers (not thewattage of the bulbs). There is an absolute maximum of 5 transformers on any Bri-Mod RD1 circuit (exceptwith VARILIGHT LV Transformerswhere you can add the bulb wattages up to the Bri-Mod RD1 "Max. Load" and use up to 10 transformers). Choose transformers with a maximum rating close to their lamp load (e.g. Use a 60VA or 70VA transformer to control a 50W low voltage bulb); exceptwith VARILIGHT LV Transformerswhenany lamp loading will work.
N.B. Certain transformers may not behave according to their power rating when used with a dimmer. An overload will result in the safety features of this Bri-Luxe module turning down the brightness. If so change your transformer(s) (VARILIGHT transformers recommended); or remove one (or some) transformer(s) from the circuit.

*If a transformer appears as a highly inductive load, e.g. Wire-wound or toroidal transformers, the Bri-Mod RD1 will not work. To protect itself it will turn off within 1 second. The Bri-Mod RD1 module will allow this to happen 3 times before blocking further use until it is disconnected and reconnected to the mains electricity supply.

OVERLOAD PROTECTION
As a safety feature, the Bri-Mod RD1 is protected against overload and overheating. (N.B. Some types of bulb can draw more current as they age and overload the dimmer switch).
If the Bri-Mod RD1 becomes too hot it will attempt to handle the overload by reducing the brightness of the lamps. If it is unable to do so the Bri-Mod RD1 will automatically turn the lights off until the overload is removed. The Bri-Mod RD1 is reset by switching off the power and switching it back on.

  2. The Bri-Mod RD1 module has not been tampered with or taken apart.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

  1. Should I be concerned if the Bri-Mod RD1 is very warm during use? The Bri-Mod RD1 will become warm during use. The more lights the dimmer module is controlling, the warmer it will become. On its maximum load the Bri-Mod RD1 can become very warm. As long as you have not overloaded the RD1 module, this is no cause for alarm. If the Bri-Mod RD1 module is overloaded it will turn the lights down or off.
  2. What happens if I have a power cut? If for any reason the power is lost to the Bri-Mod RD1, it will remember the button (key) you have programmed it to respond to on your remote control handset as well as the last light level setting.
  3. Why won’t my Bri-Mod RD1 respond to the remote control? Check batteries are not flat and are connected properly to the contacts in the handset. Make sure you aim the remote control handset at the green Bri-Luxe logo on the Bri-Mod RD1 module and that there is nothing in the way to block the signal. Move closer to the Bri-Mod RD1 module.
  4. The lights seem to be less bright when on full brightness. If the lights are drawing too much current the Bri-Mod RD1 will attempt to handle this overload by reducing the brightness of the lamps. This can occur when certain types of bulb age.
  5. The Bri-Mod RD1 keeps turning itself off.
    1. The Bri-Mod RD1 may be doing this because it is grossly overloaded. Use lower wattage bulbs or dimmable electronic transformers to reduce the load. Otherwise use the Bri-Mod RD1 elsewhere on a suitable load.
    2. The Bri-Mod RD1 will also turn off if you are trying to control an unsuitable inductive load (such as a wire-wound or toroidal transformer). In this case change the load to a dimmable electronic transformer. If the Bri-Mod RD1 is still “blocked” disconnect it

Programming & Operating Guide

Bri-Mod RD1 Outdoor Remote Controlled Intelligent Dimmer Switch Module

Please read these instructions fully before commencing programming. To enable programming of the Bri-Mod RD1 module you will need an infrared (IR) remote control handset. This can be one you already have to control your TV or DVD etc. or you may purchase separately the Bri-Luxe IR-DX1 long range remote control handset for this application.

The Bri-Mod RD1 dimmer switch module can be programmed to respond to any of the buttons (keys) on the Bri-Luxe IR-DX1 remote control handset (purchased separately) or any button on an IR remote control handset you have already. If there is a button that you do not currently use then you can use it to control the dimmer by following the steps below:-

Once the Bri-Mod RD1 has been successfully installed in an appropriate location as described in the accompanying Bri-Luxe Installation Instructions, the programming sequence can commence.

Switch on the mains supply to the Bri-Mod RD1 and ensure power to the module is present.

The Bri-Mod RD1 is now ready for programming and testing.

Programming and Operation of the Bri-Mod RD1

1. To set the Bri-Mod RD1 to learn mode, lightly tap or swipe the blue end of the wand on or across the blue circle located on the side of the Bri-Mod RD1 module 6 times at 1 second intervals. Make sure the wand is moved at least 10cm away from the RD1 module following each tap. Every successful tap causes the light(s) to turn on and off. After 6 successful taps or swipes on the blue circle the lights will step up and down in brightness once and go off.

2. Within 15 seconds and from a distance of less than 1 metre, aim the IR remote control handset directly at the green Bri-Luxe Logo on the Bri-Mod RD1 module. Press and hold down the chosen button on your remote control handset for at least 2 seconds before releasing. The light(s) will turn on and turn off.

3. To confirm your choice, aim the IR remote control handset directly at the green Bri-Luxe Logo on the Bri-Mod RD1 module, press and hold down the same button again on the remote control as used in step 2 for at least 2 seconds before releasing. If the programming has been successful, the light(s) will turn on and turn off then step up and down and turn off to verify.  Now try controlling the Bri-Mod RD1 with the IR remote control handset. If it does not respond, return to step 1 above and repeat the procedure. If the problem persists, try programming the Bri-Mod RD1 using a different button on your remote control handset, a different IR remote control handset or purchase a Bri-Luxe IR-DX1 long range remote control handset.

4. You can now use this button on the remote control to operate the Bri-Mod RD1. For best results always aim the IR remote control handset directly at the green Bri-Luxe logo on the Bri-Mod RD1 module. A single touch on the remote control button will turn the light(s) on and off.

Holding the button down will make the brightness cycle up and down. To change the direction of the dimming cycle release the button momentarily and then press the button again. Release the button when the desired light level is reached.

Note: The Bri-Luxe RD1 dimmer switch module can also be controlled by using the programming wand. Ensure power to the Bri-Mod RD1 is present. To initialise the Bri-Mod RD1 module, gently tap and hold the blue end of the wand on the blue circle located on the side of the RD1 module once for at least 2 seconds. The Bri-Mod RD1 will respond by making the light(s) brighter. A single tap will now turn the light(s) on or off. To dim the lights, keep contact between the blue end of the programming wand and the blue circle on the RD1 module until the desired light level is reached. While contact is maintained, the brightness will cycle up and down. To change the direction of the dimming cycle pull the programming wand briefly away from the blue circle and then make contact again with it. When the brightness reaches the level you require, remove the wand from the blue circle.

The memory in the Bri-Mod RD1 module will remember the button (key) you have programmed it to respond to on your remote control handset as well as the last light level setting for many years, even if there is no power applied to the Bri-Mod RD1 module over that time.
